Plot: In Nazi occupied France, the Basterds are a group of Jewish American soldiers, led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), whose only goal is to kill Nazis. They each have a personal goal of collecting 100 Nazi scalps. They team up with a British Spy and a double agent, German actress Bridget von Hammersmark, to plot the assassination of Hitler, Goering and Geobbels in Operation Kino. The German hierarchy are planning a special screening of a new propaganda film based on the survival of a German sniper, and will be held in a Paris cinema run by Emmanuelle Mimieux. But whilst the Basterds are planning to infiltrate the screening and blow the theatre, the owner has her own plan. Because Emmanuelle is in fact a Jew who survived the massacre of her family at the hands of ‘Jew Hunter’ Hans Landa, who will also be present at the screening.
My Thoughts: This is an excellent and well delivered film. The plot is brought to you in five ‘chapters’ each one needed to develop the story along. In chapter one, we are introduced to Hans Landa, the ‘Jew Hunter’ as he interrogates the Frenchman hiding a Jewish family. The scene is tense and emotive. We also see Shosanna escape the massacre at the end of the chapter. Chapter 2 introduces us to the Basterds, and sets the scene of their code of conduct. They kill Nazis and scalp them, but the few they let go (to spread the word) they carve a swastika into their foreheads. Chapter 3 develops the story of why the premiere is going to be screened in Emmanuelle’s cinema. We meet the German Private Zoller, the sniper and start of the film to be screened, who has a little crush on Emmanuelle. We also meet Goebbels, excellently played by Sylvester Groth, as the German film producer and propaganda merchant. Chapter 4 develops the ‘operation Kino’ story. We meet the British spy (and his senior officer played by Mike Myers which has hints of Dr Evil) and the actress Van Hammersmark. This chapter has the finest scene in the film, set in e cellar bar, where the Basterds are to first meet the actress. Chapter 5 is the climax, will the assassination attempt come to fruition? (I won’t spoil the ending)
Brad Pitt does well in his role, and there are some comic moments, especially when he and his group pretend to Italian! But the films greatest asset is Christopher Waltz as Hans Landa…. And what an ending!
It is a long film (Two and a half hours) and involves a lot of reading subtitles, but don’t let that put you off. There are some gruesome scenes too (the scalping for instance) but it is never too much. This film is a must see!
Best bit: Chapter 4 had me on the edge of my seat! So Tense!
Score: 10/10

 Comments

The Final Destination (3D)

The Final Destination (3D)
Plot: After surviving a horrific accident at a Speedway racing event, due to the premonition of main character Nick, the survivors all start dying in violent ways. Death wants his due, so can nick and his girlfriend Lori outwit him and cheat death?
My Thoughts: If you’ve seen any of the other Final Destination films then you know the premise. The fact that it is in 3D does add another dimension (which I suppose is the point) but it’s not enough to resurrect this poor performance film. The idea was original once, but it seems to me this latest instalment has lacked any originality. There are some gruesome moments of course and you are waiting for things to happen, such as in the hairdressers, with all that wobbly furniture and sharp objects, but it never reaches great climaxes. The 3D effects are cool, but even though the first time the screwdriver flies at you is exciting, the rest is hit or miss. There were even some in the cinema that said it wasn’t really working for them. The best 3D set piece for me was the opening titles, which I am sure held some images linking this film to the previous films.
On the whole this is a short, lacklustre addition to the series. There are very few new ideas. There’s always a nail gun somewhere. And a bus that appears from no-where at high speed to knock someone over. However I did like the subtle images relating to the other films (like the bus with 180 written on the top- the number of the original plane), although I have no idea if they were purposely put in or I was just looking for more clues than there actually were.
Best bit: The 3D opening credits were fun. And the scene in the car wash was one of the rare ‘new’ ideas.
Score: 5/10

 Comments

G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Plot: Army men Duke and Ripcord join an elite unit of Black-Ops soldiers known as G.I. Joe to stop a gang of terrorists launching warheads that release Nanobytes that eat metal.
My Thoughts: This film is one of the cheesiest, cliché ridden films ever released! I normally like cheesy action films but this was almost embarrassing. There little depth in the script, except for a few flashback moments designed to fill in back story and a few ‘surprise’ twists that you could see coming a mile off. However there is plenty of fast paced action, especially the race through Paris. There is plenty of scope for improvement and I hope that the (inevitable) second movie does better
Best bit: the race through Paris
Score: 6/10

 Comments

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Plot: Harry is back at Hogwarts and this time there is a new potions master, Professor Slughorn. Dumbledore has asked Harry to get close to Slughorn as the professor has a memory that Dumbledore needs to help work out how to destroy Voldemort. Meanwhile Harry finds a potions book which used to be owned by someone calling themselves ‘The Half Blood Prince’ and it has some useful spells in it, love is in the ait for Ron and Draco is acting suspiciously with a new cupboard in the Room of Requirement.
My Thoughts: These films are getting darker and scarier as they go on. Who remember ths light cheesiness of the Philsopher’s Stone? It is a long film but still only manages to skim you through the story without much depth. The whole ‘Half Blood Prince’ seems to be a secondary story element and is not developed in as much depth as you would expect given the fact that it is in the title. Perhaps it should have been Harry Potter and The Rush Through To The End. And the film doesn’t leave you satisfied, but much of that is to do with the nature of all seven books as a collection. This film really does lead on to the next, setting up the anticipation of what is to come. However there are some things the film does well… especially when it comes to Hermione’s and Harry’s love interests.
On the whole, a ‘good but not as satisfying as the others’ film which will fans will enjoy and non fans should avoid!
Best Bit: The fight in the corn field
Score: 7/10

 Comments

The Hangover

The Hangover
Plot: Doug is about to get married, so for his stag do he takes his friends, Phil and Stu, along with his fiancees strange brother Alan, to Las Vegas for a stag do. The night starts off well with a celebratory drink on the roof of their hotel… ..
But the next morning they wake up, their room is trashed, there is a tiger in the bathroom, there is a baby in the cupboard, Stu has lost a tooth, Phil has a hospital tag on his arm and Doug is totally missing. And no-one can remember a thing about the night before.
They three have to piece together the clues to find out what happened during their stag night, find what happened to Doug and get him back in time for his wedding!
My thoughts: As a Red Darf fan this has striking similarities to the episode ‘Thanks for the Memory’ when the whole weekend disappeared, the jigsaw was completed and two legs were broken! This is a cleverly developed film although the plot is a little cliché at times. All the things you can expect to happen do happen. The clever thing about it is connecting the timeline together as the three friends try to puzzle over the events of the night before. Some leads end up to shocking (for the characters, but obvious to the viewer) events, but produce dead ends in the serach for Doug.
Basically this is a good fun film with an intelligent plot and many laughs! Definitely worth a watch this summer!
Best bit: When the cops finally catch up with the boys. And the tiger!
Score: 08/10

 Comments

Drag me to Hell

Drag me to Hell
Plot: When Christine Brown turns down Mrs Ganush’s request to extend her loan,Mrs Ganush curses with a Laima, a demon that taunts you for three days then (as the title suggests) drags you to hell. Christine, with the help of medium Rham and boyfriend Clay, has to find a way to lift the curse before the three days are up.
My thoughts: This is a dark ly comic horror and not to be taken seriously. This film had more scenes that made me go ‘eeurgh’ than any horror film I have seen. And not because of the use of horror, blood or gore. But because false teeth are gross! The first attack scene when the old Mrs Ganush (who is amazingly difficult to kill) attacks Christine, there is enough toothless slobbery sucking to make anyone turn away!
The plot itself is straight forward, and you may well see the twist coming a mile off (especially if you wondered why Clay put the coin in the envelope early on). There is of generic horror elements, some of which have a comic touch (I personally liked the goat), and it is worth watching just to see how Christine copes with the dilemma of whether to pass the curse on.
ON the whole it is a worthy comic horror movie to be taken with a pinch of salt… but please keep your teeth in!
Best bits: The attack in the car park, and the séance
Score: 7/10

 Comments

Terminator Salvation

Terminator Salvation
Plot: It’s 2018 and John Connor is leading the resistance against Skynet. They believe they have found a signal which can stop the machines from working. They need to test it and attack San Franisico’s main Skynet base, but young rebel, and future father of Connor, Kyle Reese ends up being held captice there. Can John rescue the boy before the attack, and can he trust the mysterious new arrival, Marcus Wright
My thoughts: Thanksfully the television showed T3 earlier in the week and I managed to bone up on some opf the plot. T3 was a bit camp and rubbish and in comparison this film is very good. In fact I really enjoyed it! The story is straight forward with few twists, but there is plenty of fast action and machine mashing, and the story connects well with the other previous films. There is even Arnie’s face (badly cgi’d) on the big T800 at the end!
ON the whole this is a fun, fast paced sci fi film which introduces the next ‘chapter’ of the terminator films.
Best bit: The action scene as Marcus tried to protect Kyle
Score: 7/10

 Comments

X Men Origins: Wolverine

X Men Origins: Wolverine
Plot: James Howlett (AKA Logan) and half brother Victor Creed survive through many years and wars doing what they do best. killing! After surviving a firing squad, Major Stryker offers them work on a mutant strike force ‘team X’. The questionable antics force Logan to leave the team and he heads off to lead a normal life with girlfriend Kayla. Six Years Later, Stryker returns to inform Logan that Victor is now killing off members of team X and offers him a way to defeat him; by giving him a skeleton of adamantine, which he agrees to after Victor kills Kayla. Stryker then double crosses Logan (now nicknamed Wolverine) so Logan hunts down Stryker and his laboratory, where they are experimenting on a new killer, Weapon XI.
My Thoughts: I am not sure my plot description does the film justice, as it appears to be a touch confusing, but the film does make sense. I was worried that the film will just be about Wolverine and how he began, but thankfully there is a great story and some great new mutant characters, such as Dukes and Gambit! The action is fast paced and thrilling, with some great fight scenes.
On the whole this film is a wonderful addition to the X-men universe.
Best Bit: The end fight scene with Creed and Weapon 11! Also the new characters are good fun: my favourite was Gambit and I hope to see him again.
Score: 9/10

 Comments

Angels and Demons

Angels and Demons
Plot: Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is back. The Pope has died and four Preferiti have been kidnapped by someone claiming to be Illuminati. They are going to kill one every hour and lay their bodies at altars around Rome and then blow up the Vatican using a stolen vial of AnitMatter. Can Longdon, with the help of Physicist Vittoria, follow the clues of the Illimunati before the anti matter explodes?
My Thoughts: I read the book after the Da Vinci Code Book, but found the book slower to get in to. The film also suffers from the same thing. It takes a while to get going. The action really only starts when they are follwing the path through Rome. In my mind, his book didn’t transfer to film so well (and I think they changed a few things, but it was a long time since I read the book). There are some nice action scenes, like the ‘Fire’ scene, but it never really hits any great crescendo and I didn’t get to feel much of a sense of danger from the threat.
It is still a good film, but I think the book was better.
Best Bit: The ‘Fire’ and ‘Water’ scenes.
Score: 7/10

 Comments

Star Trek

Star Trek
Plot: Not to give too much away… new academy recruits Kirk, Spok, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov and ‘Bones’ board the brand new flagship ‘Enterprise’ as they try to stop the threat of a Rogue Romulan from the future… one with a grudge against Ambassador Spok! Let the adventure begin…
My Thoughts: To be honest I was expecting not to like this film as much as I did. I had heard that the new ‘Kirk’ was a bit arrogant and unlikeable, but I found him quite believable as the hero (and I didn’t dislike him). Sylar from Heroes makes a brilliant Spok and really added something to the role. In fact the entire crew were very well drawn and believeable… except for one thing that really annoyed me. And that was the Uhura/Spok thing. Where did that come from? I didn’t find that at all believable. And if you’re wondering why I didn’t list Scotty in the crew above, it’s because they pick him up a bit later. And Simon Pegg does a great job as Scotty- regardless of the accent , but my favourite character was Chekov- A manic mathematician with the inablility to say the letter V. The story is well delivered and the action is gripping right from the start. The script has enough for the old fans to enjoy but obviously gives scope for writers to begin afresh for future films (and I hope there are more)
On the whole it is a well written action adventure that really made me thirsty for more. If only they didn’t do the Uhura/ Spok thing.
Best Bit: Bones stows Kirk onto the Enterprise by giving him an injection, with some bizarre side effects
Score: 10/10 ( I was tempted to drop it down to 9 but I decided to turn a blind eye to the Uhura/Spok thing)

 Comments

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Ghosts of Girlfriends past
Plot: Connor Mead is a fashion photographer and a certifiedbachelor/ladies man. He gets invited to his brothers wedding, where he gets visited by the ghost of his uncle Wayne. The ghost tells him to expect visits from three ghosts overnight, the ghost og girlfriends past, present and future. Will they help him change his ways and realise that his only true love, Jenny, could be escaping him.
My thoughts: You may be mistaken to think that this is a subtle remake of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol’. But you’d be wrong! Because it is no way subtle! In fact at one point it, it makes fun of the fact.; when the ghosts have visited he opens the window and calls out to a young lad in the snow “What day is it today? Is it Christmas?”
The characters are one dimensional so as not to complicate the idea of the simple plot. The film is cheesy but not unpleasant and although the comedy is never laugh out loud funny, there isbound to be enough to put a smile on your face. The characters are paint by numbers characters, as if someone had a checklist of stereotypes to have in the film. Connors character is “over the top” batchelor-esque but I suppose this is to make the change more obvious at the end.
On the whole a pleasant comedy, but it had no real stand out moments. I was wishing for a scene stealer like Rupert Everett in ‘My Best friends Wedding’, but it never quite happened.
Best bits: The ghost of Christmas Past was quite funny. And the Weding cake disaster
Score: 6/10

Plot: Peter (Paul Rudd) is about to get married. His fiancé, Zooey, has plenty of girl friends to share her intimate moments with and ask to be bridesmaids. Paul who has only really felt comfortable in the company of women, hasn’t got a male best friend to ask to be best man. So Peter decides to hunt out a male best friend. ….. enter Sidney, a fun loving, gross but honest bachelor.
My thoughts: This is a great buddy movie. I have always rated Paul Rudd as an actor and he shines in this film. The character Peter is well portrayed, especially showing his discomfort in male social situations. In fact I feel a certain empathy towards the character of Peter: The scenes where he is hovering over the phone not knowing the protocol about how to arrange man-dates are scenes I have played out myself. There were moments in the film where I thought to myself “That is so true!” It is good to see a film delving into the realms of man-dating, as most other films have character relationships already established.
Sydney is a great contrast character: the type of character that most men envy. He helps lead Peter into his missing guyhood, but works really well is that by the end of it, Sidney needs Peter just us much as Peter needs Sidney.
The relationship between Zooey and Peter is also well created You can see her discomfort in the company of Sid and she feels like she may be losing Peter, even though it was her (and friends) discussions that led him to search for a male friend.
ON the whole, a great buddy movie with great acting. And a great performance from old rockers Rush!
Best Bit: Paul Rudd shines as Peter. His scenes with Sid show the discomfort Peter has in male social situations. I know these feelings well
Score: 8/10

Plot: In 1959, a school decides to bury a time capsule. Most of the children draw pictures, but a young girl, haunted by voices, writes pages of numbers. 50 years later, the time capsule is opened and young Caleb receives the numbers. Caleb’s dad, astrophysicist John Koestler (Nicholas Cage) finds a pattern and realises the numbers represent dates and death rates of national disasters. However, there are a few dates yet to come and the final one predicts the end of the world.
My Thoughts: As a mathematician I was interested to watch a movie based around numbers, and on the whole I wasn’t disappointed. There is a darkness and a sense of foreboding in the way the film is shot, which makes Nicholas Cage a good choice of actor for main character. I did feel the ending of the film was a bit rushed and weak compared to the rest of it. It is as if the writers, after producing a great idea, didn’t really know how to end it.
On the whole, it is a nice, sharp sci-fi movie, with a blunt ending. Think Dark Water meets Close Encounters.
Best Bit: The disaster scenes are well shot (If a little unbelievable- I really think if he was that close to a plane crashing, he wouldn’t have been totally unharmed!)
Score: 7/10

 Comments

Watchmen

Watchmen
Plot: The watchmen, a group of self appointed superheroes, are in trouble. One of their number, "The Comedian" has been murdered. Could this mean that someone is out to kill the masked superheroes? And is this the end of the world?
My thoughts. This film was not what I expected it to be. it was not a straigh-forward superhero movie. In fact, the masked heroes are human (with the exception of Dr Manhatten- who evolved after an accident in a Nuclear Reactor). These heroes have faults and desires and they are explored, mostly in flashback form, in this dark "Sin City" style film. The main characters, who have all but retired from Superhero-dom, struggle with the thought of coming out of retirement to find out who may be behind the recent murder of "The Comedian". The film is long (A hefty 2 and a half hours) and can drag in places, but there is enough to keep you going. In is interesting to see how the characters became their superhero alter egos (especially in the case of Rorshach- who has the most mesmerising mask which swirls into different ink-blot styles). The film does pick up at the end, and there is plenty of action in the second half, but it does take a while to get there!
On the whole, if you enjoy dark comic style movies with depth then you will enjoy this. If you prefer the light-hearted hero film, then this might be too much. It is an 18 and there is plenty of violence and gore- especially when Rorschach is involved (just wait for the scenes in the prison))
Plus the ending is a surprise- it was just a shame that you had to wait so long for it. But, I suppose to make it shorter they would have had to cut stuff out, and then it wouldn't have worked so well.
Best bit: Rorshach in prison- and the exciting end!
Score: 8/10

Plot: Ray (Clive Owen) and Claire (Julia Roberts) met five years ago when they were both working for their country's secret service. Now they have decided to go private and are working for Echochrome, who are bent on stealing research from their rival company. But Ray and Claire have their own agenda.... just exactly who is playing who?
My Thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The plot has a few good twists, which you may be expecting but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The film delves into the seedy world of corporate espionage, as one firm does everything it can to be one step ahead of its rival. The chemistry between Julia and Clive is evident in their scenes, and they play out the dialogues excellently- wwith just enough paranioa and suspicion.
On the whole a good thriller with a nice twist at the end.
Best bit: The Paranoid dialogue between Ray and Claire; and the final scenes are good too- especially when they are about to steal the formula
Score: 8/10

Plot: The film follows Colonel Von Stauffenburg as he plots to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the Nazi government. To succeed the Stauffenburg needs to re-write Operation Valkyrie- the operation that brings the reserve national guard into play in case of an emergency. The plan is to assassinate Hitler and then invoke operation Valkyrie to blame the SS and keep the Nazi government occupied while a new government it put in place, therefore ending the war!
My thoughts: This is a very interesting film, with some great historical significance. Tom Cruise is very good, (but I am biased) even when playing a one-armed, one eyed German (Oddly enough all the Germans are American or British!). But as a film it can be slow and dull in places, especially at the beginning. In fact. Other than the North African scene at the beginning, there isn’t any gunfire until 1hr 45 mins into it (And that’s near the end) However, there is plenty of suspense- especially in the scenes where the assassination is taking place.
So this isn’t an action packed blockbuster, but it does give an insight into this historical event. There is some great acting and plenty of suspense
Best Bit: Blowing up Hitler (almost)
Score: 7/10

 Comments

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire
Plot: Jamal Malik is set to win big in the Indian Who wants to be a Millionaire. Howeer, the host thinks he has cheated because he has got all the answers right, and the police have arrested him. As the policeman tries to decide whether Jamal is a fraudster, we see in flashback form, the story of his life and childhood, where each incident shows the reason why he knows the answer to a specific question.

My thoughts: I went to this with a friend, who has read the book, and the one thing he said was “That was nothing like the book!” Whether that’s a good thing, I don’t know, but it sounds like the book is much darker than the film was, which is quite disturbing, because I thought the film was quite dark! As you go through the film you realise that the questions being asked are answered via the flashbacks in his life, which makes me think if it were me I would have quit the game show early on, as every single questions seemed to bring back a harrowing memory! In the centre of the story, there is a love story as Jamal tries to find his childhood friend Latika, whom he had to leave behind as he and his brother escaped from a ‘Dickens-esque’ orphanage where the man in charge blinds the kids to get them to earn more money begging. And it seems to get darker still as hi brother ends up shooting someone and Latika ends up the property of an Indian gangster.
There are a few laughs though, especially when the young boys are trying to earn money by being tour guides, and these light moments are welcome within the context of the film.
But it is a great film, well directed and a unique experience.
Best bits: Tour guiding through the Taj Mahal and when Jamal is on the phone to a lady in Scotland from the call centre.
Score: 8/10

 Comments

Inkheart

Inkheart
Plot: Mortimer (Brendan Fraser) is a Silvertongue- a person that can bring characters to life just by reading from a page. However, whenever a character comes out of a book, someone must go into the book to redress the balance, which is what happened ten years ago. Whilst reading the book Inkheart, the villainous Capricorn and his henchman escape the pages, and Mortimer’s own wife gets written into the book. Morrtimer spends his time searching for a copy of the book, with his daughter Meggie and Dustfinger, another character from the book who desperately wants to return. However, Capricorn also needs a silvertongue to read Inkheart and draw out the monstrous Shadow from the book.
My thoughts: A bit of slow adventure, which probably reads better as a book than a movie. Brendan Fraser’s portrayal does not shine, and neither does Paul Bettany as Dustfinger. However, there is a surprisingly over the top dramatic performance from Helen Mirram as Mortimer’s Aunt!
On the whole, if you enjoyed The Golden Compass and other such adaptations, then this will prove a good choice, but it lacks any Hollywood glitz or action (wich may be a bonus for some.
Best Bits: The use of the Wizard of Oz. And Helen Mirram dame-ing it up!
Score: 6/10

 Comments

Yes Man

Yes Man
Plot: Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) says no to almost everything in life, especially to his friends, but when an old acquaintance suggests he attends a seminar, he makes a past with himself to say yes to everything. Very soon his life changes when an act of ‘yes’ leads him to meet Allison, a sports photographer and musician with a difference.
My Thoughts: As you may know I have read the book by Danny Wallace and loved it. I was worried when I heard that there was a film being made of it, but I shouldn’t have worried. Not because the film is any good, but the fact that it is nothing like the book- the only thing in common is the idea… saying yes to everything. The film itself is a pretty straightforward Jim Carrey Comedy (It’s basically Liar Liar in disguise) and he gurns his way through a series of amusing situations.. It is not a bad film and has some touching moments, but there is very little depth- unlike the book (please read it). Danny Wallace even has a cameo! (I almost shouted “there’s Danny Wallace” out loud in the cinema)
Basically if you liked Liar Liar you will like this. It is an inoffensive touching comedy but is pretty one dimensional.
Best Bit: Talking the guy from the window ledge, when he started singing. Even better bits are in the book
Score: 7/10

Plot: Miserable old git/dentist Bertram Pincas (Ricky Gervais) dies for 7 minutes during a routine operation. When he is revived he finds that he can see dead people, and they start stalking him to solve their unfinished business. One such ghost is Frank, who agrees to deal with the other ghosts if Bertram agrees to help split up Franks widow, Gwen, from her new partner. However, Bertram soon falls for Franks widow himself.
My thoughts: Being a fan of Ghost Whisperer I was looking forward to this film, and to my surprise I actually enjoyed it- although it is not as glamorous as the TV show (Ricky Gervais is NO Jennifer Love Hewitt). Ricky does a typical Ricky performance as the aggravated Bertram, who has no time for people or life, but his relationship with Gwen does provide some heart and some funny lines (although the laugh is typical of Ricky Gervais). But this is no laugh a minute comedy- in fact there were some in the cinema that didn’t laugh at all, and it’s slow pace and dour feel (mostly from Ricky’s character) will put some people off.
On the whole, if you are a fan of the genre or are a Ricky Gervais fan, then give it a go. But if you are looking for a lighthearted fun film (such as Just Like Heaven), then maybe pass this one over
Best bits: The scene when Bertram finds out he has died and the scene when Bertram goes round to dinner with Gwen and her new partner. There is some pleasant (but ultimately Gervais-y) dialogue.
Score: 6/10

 Comments

Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace
Plot: Bond is back and the film carries on from where Casino Royale left off. Bond has captured Mr White and is about to interrogate him, when he escapes. Bond’s investigations lead him to Dominic Greene, an environmentalist who is plotting to stock up the water in Bolivia. Also stalking Dominic is Camille, who is out for revenge on her parents’ killer, General Medrano.
My Thoughts: I am not sure that my Plot summary made sense. At times I wasn’t sure that the plot of the film made sense. I know there was a villain called Greene. I think he had some information about a crime syndicate called Quantum, but we didn’t get to hear too much about that. However, there is plenty of action… in the first half of the film. It then slowed down in the middle and got a bit dull, only the lovely visage of Gemma Alterton hamming it up in Brit Mode could lighten the mood. However it did pick up again at the end.
ON the whole, this is not as good as Casino Royale, and the plot did seem to lose itself somewhere, but there is plenty of actions and Craig shines again as the sultry hard-assed spy.
Best Bit: The scene in the Opera was good fun. And another roof top action packed start to the movie was exciting
Score: 8/10

 Comments

Saw 5

Saw 5
Plot: FBI Agent Strahm, a survivor from Saw 4, is on to cop Hoffman, who is one of Jigsaw’s disciples. Whilst Strahm follows clues that unravel (in flashback form) the story of how Hoffman got ‘recruited’, Hoffman is laying his own trap for Strahm, whilst five strangers are playing on of Jigsaw’s ‘games’ (even though Jigsaw is dead)
My Thoughts: I like the Saw movies. But unlike the originl Saw, which was shocking and innovative, this fifth instalment is predictable and slightly lame. The most interesting thing for me were the connections between the other four films. The traps set four the ‘five’ strangers were predicatable and not as gory as previous films (although seeing that man wave his sawn arm around did make me go eurgh!). plus I am sure there was a connection between them- something to do with houses- but it was dealt with very glibly and was almost ignored. And the thing that was supposed to be the big ‘surprise’ ending…. Was not really a surprise
On the whole, the film delivers very little surprise or suspense. But there is gore and plenty of backstory and connections with the other films. Not a masterpiece, but will do well over Halloween (well it is tradition now)
Best Bit: Connecting previous films
Score: 6/10

 Comments

Eagle Eye

Eagle Eye
Plot: After the death of his twin brother, Jerry Shaw gets an anonymous phone call from an unknown female. She has set him up so that he has to work for her on some unknown mission. Also recruited is single mum Rachel, whose son is on a school trip to play the trumpet for the president. Together, the pair are forced to rob an armoured truck and break into the pentagon, where a computer named ‘Aria’ is in charge of the Eagle Eye project- an AI designed to spy and act on intelligence gained from around the world.
My Thoughts: This story has so many holes it could double as a sieve. The characters are unrealistic and unbelievable, as is the story. There is plenty of action and some intriguing set pieces (like in the airport baggage terminal), but it seems remarkably easy to break into the pentagon or have access to the airport.
This film tried to be clever, but I think there are better movies out there (like Enemy of the State- or the classic ‘The Net’). It is far too unbelievable to be clever. There were too many ‘That was too easy’ or ‘That would never happen’ or ‘He/She would be dead by now’ moments.
Best bit: Er… the airport baggage chutes scene was quite funny. And the last scene was quite touching
Score: 5/10

Plot: Osborne Cox used to be high up in the government until he was demoted for “having a drink problem”, after which he quit his job, deciding instead to write his memoirs. His wife Katie, who is having an affair with Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), is less than impressed and start divorce proceedings, and, on instructions from her lawyer, investigates her husband’s home computer files. These files were placed on a computer disc and were left accidentally at the ‘Hardbodies’ gym, where Linda and Chad (Brad Pitt) work. Chad is convinced the files are secret government documents and he an Linda decide to try and blackmail Os. For Linda this is her opportunity to get money to pay for Surgery, as she is internet dating and one of the men she dates happens to be Harry! Then things start getting complicated….
My Thoughts: After a very slow start with little to laugh at (except perhaps the ‘Mormon’ joke) things do pick up throughout the film. The story could have been titled ‘Much Ado About Nothing 2’ as the whole plot revolves around scenarios of the characters own making- especially with Linda- who is obsessed about trying to get her operation money! One of the most amusing ideas in the film is the way that the government agency try to sweep everything under the carpet without really having a clue what is going on. As the chief said “Report back to me when things start to make sense”-
Best bit: When Chad and Linda try to blackmail Os on the phone!
Score: 6/10

 Comments

Taken

Taken
Plot: Bryan is a former FBI agent now working security jobs to be close to his daughter, Kim, who lives with her mother and rich step-father. When Kim wants to go to Paris with her friend Amanda, Bryan reluctantly lets her. However, Kim and Amanda are ‘spotted’ at the airport they end up kidnapped and sold into the white slave trade. Bryan uses all his resources to track down the kidnappers and rescue his daughter.
My Thoughts: Even though this got a bad review in the paper, I actually enjoyed the story. Liam Neeson’s acting is a little wooden, but I did believe his relationship with his daughter. There is plenty of action, fights and gunfire. The story is simple, and a little bit too tidy; he manages to track the baddies down quite easily! Plus it was lucky that his daughter was the last one to be sold!
If you like a bit of thriller action and are not too worried about plot holes then this is worth a watch. Plus there is a cameo for Holly Valence (of Neighbours) playing a pop star!
Best Bit: The action in the construction yard (Don’t worry about how he got there) And I did like Bryan’s relationship with his daughter- especially at the birthday party.
Score: 7/10

 Comments

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder
Plot: A group of actors head off into Vietnam to make movie of the book of the survival of one Vietnam hero – Four-leaf Tayback(Nick Nolte). As the director Cockburn (Steve Coogan) struggles with the diva attitudes of his cast (Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Junior, Jack Black), Four-leaf suggests they send the actors into the jungle for real with hidden cameras, to get the real emotion! Once in the jungle, the actors find themselves in the middle of a drugs operation with real armed guerrillas! With hostages, explosions and over the top acting, will the actors manage to escape?
My Thoughts: There are laughs right from the very start of the movie as we see the actors in their most recent roles! My favourite was Satan’s Alley! The story is well developed even if it is a bit silly in places. However, the silliness is funny and you can’t help but laugh- like when Ben Stiller is made to perform his flop film ‘Simple Jack’. The interplay between the characters is very well done, especially between Alpa Chino and Kirk Lazarus, who is so into his character that he has had his skin surgically darkened for the role. Jack Black does well, but I felt his character was underused. There is even a great tongue in cheek role for Tom Cruise as a balding Jewish film producer!
ON the whole, this is a must see film - great comedy, scripting and acting.
Best bits: There are so many. The introductory previews; Steve Coogan’s Head (If you’ve seen it you know), ‘Simple Jack’, the backstabbing baby, and Tom Cruise pimping his style.
Score: 9/10

 Comments

Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express
Plot: When pot smoking process server Dale witnesses a drug related murder he leaves behind a cigarette at the scene. The cigarette contains a rare blend of Marijuana known as Pineapple Express. Drug baron (and murderer) Ted Jones, traces the pot back to Dales dealer Saul (via Sauls dealer Red). From then on, both Saul and Dale are on the run trying not to get killed (by either Ted or his Chinese rivals) and enjoying some pot along the way.
My thoughts: The film started quite slowly and I was unsure how the story would unfold. However I was pleasantly surprised. Both Dale and Sean spend the film high which leads to some interesting male bonding exchanges and some paranoid conversations. Also there are some nice scenes with Dale’s college student girlfriend, especially when Dale eventually goes round to dinner. The interplay between the characters is well done (if a little bizarre at times) and there is enough action to keep you involved. The story is both ridiculous and touching (It’s basically a buddy movie with guns and explosions)
On the whole, it is an off the wall comedy that is definitely worth a viewing.
Best Bit: The cop car chase. When Saul puts his foot through the windscreen is the first moment that I laughed out loud!
Score: 7/10

 Comments

Disaster Movie

Disaster Movie
Plot: Er…. Some lame movie/personality piss-takes in th guise of a comedy. Some fake meteors and some shaky camerawork supposedly add to the menace, as four teens (??) battle with armageddon and some bad spoofs
My thoughts: And I thought Date Movie was bad! Too any movie parodies that don’t really hit the mark. No story apart from the lame idea of the world ending. There was an interesting moment near the end with some Indiana Jones connection, but not much. The 8 year olds in the audience laughed at the burping Amy Winehouse. Could do a lot better. Even the end song about dating wasn’t inspiring.
Overall, I wouldn’t bother with it really.
Best bit: Amy Winehouse was interesting. And some of the cast were nice to look at.. And the fight with the Sex in the City girls (??) wasn’t awful.
Score: 3/10

 Comments

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Plot: Anakin Skywalker and his new apprentice Ashoka Tano, have been sent to find Jabba the Hutt’s missing son, who has been kidnapped by the evil Dooku and is plotting to frome the Jedi for his kidnap. Meanwhile. Obi Wan has to convince Jabba that the Jedi are not involved so that they can secure the Outer Rim which Jabba controls.
My Thoughts: Firstly this is an animation and doesn’t use the voice actors of all the main characters- which is a bit of a let down. The story is quite simple and fun in places- especially with the Baby Hutt. There are some good action sequences but nothing outstanding. This feels more like an elongated cartoon than an animated movie. There is little emotion or heart to it- (except for the slight hint at the end when Padme got involved)
On the whole, a fun excursion back into the world of Star wars and fans will enjoy the new story, but your best to wait until it comes out on TV
Best Bit: Jabba’s camp and evil (Hooded claw anyone?) nephew Zero the Hutt. It’s pantomime really
Score: 6/10

 Comments

Get Smart

Get Smart
Plot: Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell), a man who puts the anal in analyst, dreams of being a Control agent, just like his friend Agent 23 (The Rock). When the identities of the agents are leaked, he gets his wish and he teams up with Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) to infiltrate KAOS headquarters and discover the truth about their nuclear activity. Together they uncover a plot to blow up the president.
My Thoughts: Get Smart was a great comedy spy show from the 60’s and in my opinion this film does capture that sense of fun very well. There are some nice comic moments, brilliantly played by Carell (you may have guessed but I am a fan) and some great action scenes. The plot is a little ‘lacking’ in depth- they do find the hideouts a bit too quickly! But the fun is in the action- such as the dance scene and crossing the lasers. There are a few silly moments which I could have done without – such as the scene in the cabinet room when the KAOS agent makes his threat.
This is definitely one to watch with the family, and I hope there are more in the pipeline
Best Bit: Lots to choose from. Definitely the dance off was a highlight and the car chase finale. But Steve Carell is excellent
Score: 8/10
