The Way I interpreted it, Spock was an academy instructor and Uhura was one of his top students. And I have seen teacher-student relationships in college settings develop into something more.

MacMax - I agree. IN the 1980s it was the real stars that came back to school for a seventh term in the Sixth Form to take an Oxbridge Scholarship exam. This really sorted out the stars from the A Graders!! Needless to say - I didn't do the Oxbridge Exam!! more…

In the film it is not the same scholarship system as nowadays seeing as it is set in the 80s: it's the old scholarship system, the author deliberately set it then for this very reason because he does not like the new system of obtaining scholarships.
