Brokeback Mountain
Plot: In 1963,strangers Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) get a job together tending sheep on Brokeback Mountain. However their relationship unexpectedly develops beyond friendship. When the job is brought to a sudden end, they go their different ways. The film follows the lives of the two men as they marry and have children, even though they still yearn for each other and can only meet in private a few times a year on Brokeback mountain.
My Thoughts: This is a very powerful film and you would have to be a hard lump of cheese not to be moved by it. There is very little to laugh at as the whole film has this dark underlying theme of a love that can never be accepted. Heath Ledger gives a stunning performance as a cowboy who has to cope with the images from his childhood and the homophobia instilled into him by his father. Unfortunately he does mumble some of his lines so it was difficult to catch all he said. I think another strength of the film comes from the reaction of the families affected, especially Michelle Williams who plays Alma Del Mar. The film takes place over a couple of decades; the passage of time shown only by the growth of sideburns and kids. And as the years pass, you realise that there can be no happy resolution to the situation; you can only empathise. And you will empathise.
The whole film is remarkable. A remarkable subject that is handled beautifully and remarkable performances by all actors. This ought not too be missed
Score: 9/10. No sod it 10/10. You can’t beat it for what it does
Best bit: When Jack finally stands up to his father in law, was a good moment. Other best bets; the whole bloody thing!

Thanks for leaving a comment. It was very moving, and an eye opener in many respects. It shocking that such prejudice still exists. I read in one blog that some people walked out in disgust in the first sex scene

Yes people are still very prejudiced,my daughter is gay and her life has been made very hard by narrow minded people that still hold old prejudices. She has had to change jobs several times because of it.She wont hide it though and why should she? Though she isn`t blatant about it.

I'm totally jealous that you've seen it - that anyone has seen it. Living in the Netherlands, we don't get movies until weeks after they're out in the UK. Sometimes never, sob.
Read the story its based on, by Annie Proulx?-

Theresa book? I may try and get hold of it

I found the book, but it looks like the book was written from the film. Is that right?

No, the film was an adaptation of the short book (only 50 pages or so).
Good film though, and good for breaking the hollywood mould. It's amazing to think the issue of same-sex sexuality has only really made big strides in the public sphere in the last 15-20 years.

Have you read the book? Is it worth it after the film? The film was brilliant. So much more than a same-sex story as well.

I'm afraid I haven't, but it might be a good travelling book somewhere as it is quite short.
What i've gathered from the net, the people who've read it think it's pretty good as a beginning. They say the film has done a good job of creating a more vivid picture in its own right. If that makes sense! -

I had to come and find your review of this when I saw the picture at the top of your blog as it is now a favourite of mine. What wonderful acting! That bit where Heath Ledger goes into the alleyway to be sick when he is so upset about letting Jack go makes me cry, and the passionate kiss when they meet after all that while, when his wife is watching! Whew, what a scorcher! A wonderful film. Clothes/costumes from the film were up on ebay a while ago and I was sorely tempted! I love Jake anyway though, since I saw Donnie Darko. Another of my fave films of all time.

I'm not a great fan of Heath as an actor (Casanova didnt suit him) but this part really suited him well

I also thought this was a great film. Very moving, sad film, and very sad that such prejudice existed and still exists. So many lifes messed up because people are so judgmental.
